Employment Prospects in Canada

Apart from getting an education and pursuing a career in Canada, you can also find some part-time jobs. Amazed already? Well, don’t be! Canada allows international students to work and make some side income which is just another major attraction for international students apart from great education opportunities in Canada. As amazing it may sound, the process involved in getting a part-time side hustle isn’t at all easy. Therefore, to help you out from the problems, we have gathered all the necessary information that you might need to establish a source of income while still being a student.

How can you work while studying?

Isn't it good that you pay your own bills? Canada just made it a bit easier for its international students. How great would it be to pay your bills while still studying? Well, doesn’t it sound thrilling, of course it does, at least to me!

Being an international student, you can work part-time about 20 hours a week. You have a chance to work in your own major four months a year. What’s more? You are free to spend your breaks working full-time.

This will not only make your resume more appealing but will also expose you to the real world. You are eligible for them, only if:

  1. You have a valid study permit.
  2. You are a full-time student enrolled in a degree, a diploma, or any certified course in a DLI.
  3. You have generated a Social Insurance Number.

On-Campus opportunities:

While being on campus, you will be working and utilizing campus facilities, from which few are listed below:

  • Library:  You can work part-time at your institute's library. It will involve simple tasks like arranging books back, etc.
  • Faculty: You can become a research assistant to your professor or even teaching staff in your junior grade.
  • Other services: You can even use your creative side and open some services that you are beneficial to other students, like providing them with goods that are available at distant places off, etc.

Off-campus opportunities:

Your work opportunities are not only confined to your campus. If you want, you can try your hands in the below:

  • Tutoring: while pursuing a higher degree, you can use your previous knowledge to make some extra cash. You can teach those who are your juniors.
  • Internships: depending upon your major, you can do an internship; they are a rich source of experience as well as money.
  • Volunteering: NGOs and charities always have plenty of openings; if you want to volunteer, you can get an excellent experience.
  • Other organizations: You can always go out and work part-time at cafes, hotels, at some businesses, or even at some farms.

Work opportunities after graduation:

Before starting to work officially, as an international student, you have to generate a work permit first.

One of the commonly accepted work permits in Canada is Post-Graduate Work Permit Program. A PWPP is quite flexible apart from being valid for the duration equal to your study course in Canada, and it allows you to work in any occupation along with the fact that you can switch jobs in between also. But you have only 90 days after your course's completion to apply for it.

Note — Not all the courses in DLI's are eligible for PWPP, so check it while taking admission.

Criteria to apply for the work permit

  • A valid study permit.
  • A student of DLI enrolled full time in one of its courses
  • Had worked off-campus without any prior work permit
  • Have not exceeded the time allowed to work part-time.

Canadian online tool for job hunt:

In addition to all the above, the government of Canada has started an online tool - ' Explore careers.' You can go through it once, and it will hunt a job for you on the basis of your occupation, qualification, skill, location, and more related things.

Moreover, be cautious while working in Canada; if you find you have been taken advantage of, call the authorities immediately.

Conclusion:

Working is an unavoidable part of human life. While few people find employment easily, others may not. That is why you should cherish all these opportunities while being in Canada and being independent.
